Having the opportunity to play with the HP Deskjet 4645 for a little while we took full advantage of the convenient photo printing feature. We had a couple of empty frames around the apartment, one of them was already hanging on the wall. The last piece of the puzzle, would obviously be to print out some pictures so that the frame could be populated – and so that it would look less weird than having an empty photo frame hanging on the wall!

A pack of photo paper gives you 20 sheets, which we cut up into quarters. The hard part came in deciding what to do with our 80 postcard sized sheets. We made good use of it, printing out both colour and black and white prints, working our way through a couple of printer cartridges along the way.

The Deskjet 4645 e-All-in-One has the four basic functions: print, copy, scan, and fax. We tested the first three – I don’t know anyone who still accepts faxes, never mind the last time I sent one myself. Regardless, there are evidently still people that use it.

My favourite feature was the printer’s wireless capabilities which enabled us to print from multiple devices without having to first install drivers. We printed directly  from our phones, the iPad and our MacBooks, the printer just queued it all up and spitting them out on a first-in-first-out basis. While it was really a pleasure to use, not all of our photos came out great. The blacks were not deep enough and solid colours had perceptible bands across them.

The video was filmed on a Nokia Lumia 1020. This was featured on Tech Girl.

Score:  5/10

Ideal for: The Android customer who is big on music and not so big on photographs.

Damage: R 1966

This past weekend we visited the Montecasino Bird Gardens which is a great place to test out photographic capabilities on a phone. Going into this I was looking for a phone that could possibly tip the scale for me. Everyone knows about the Android vs. Apple debate and for the past five odd years I’ve had an iPhone, but sometimes you can’t help but be curious… Both ends feel extremely strongly about this, and my phone had been giving me a few issues, so why not? Even though many people are comfortable with the Android platform, I can’t imagine my parents taking to it (aka me trying to teach it…). Read the rest of this entry »

dorothy-hodgkinThis year has been a good one for celebrating pioneering ladies in various fields, from poets, writers, educators and feminists to scientists. In May, the Google Doodle celebrated four ladies in the field of science and technology. It is fantastic that these women are celebrated on such a global scale and especially as I’m being introduced to many of them for the first time.  Read the rest of this entry »

Pauline van Dongen is a Dutch fashion designer who aims to merge fashion and technology, giving life to scientific creation, as she puts it.

There is nothing natural in nature; technology makes our humanness gives form to our surroundings. The human habitat reveals a techno-morphed structure that can no longer be hidden behind the vestiges of a natural world; technology has to be naturalized.

I have a pair of gloves that have electrical thread in the fingertips so that I can use my smartphone in colder weather. Not exactly wearable tech or high fashion, especially when compared to these designs. These futuristic prototypes are a little “out there”, but if I’m serious I’d probably a few choice items if it would charge my phone while I’m out and about. In some of these the solar panels are extremely visible and tend to be more of a statement that functional accessory. Read the rest of this entry »
